The future of accessible, team-based healthcare in Penticton just took a giant leap forward, thanks to an extraordinary act of generosity.

The South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation has announced a landmark $1 million donation to the SOS Health Care Society, marking the first major contribution towards the society’s ambitious $2.1 million fundraising goal.

This funding will help relocate and expand the Apple Plaza Community Walk-In Clinic into a significantly larger facility on Skaha Lake Road. The new space will be named The Colleen Schneider Medical Centre.

A Game-Changer for Local Healthcare

For thousands of residents who rely on walk-in and team-based care, this expansion is more than just a facility upgrade, it’s a vital solution to the ongoing doctor shortage and healthcare access issues in the South Okanagan. With only two walk-in clinics currently serving Penticton, and the Interior Health Urgent Primary Care Centre operating as a walk-in clinic only after 5 p.m., the need for expanded services has never been greater.

“This donation is more than just financial support, it’s a lifeline for families who struggle to find a doctor. It’s a bold investment in the well-being of our community,” says Medical Foundation CEO Ian Lindsay.

More Doctors, More Services, More Care

Set to open in the summer of 2025, the expanded Colleen Schneider Medical Centre will bring together walk-in services, family physicians, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals under one roof. More healthcare providers will be added, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive, team-based care tailored to their needs.

Construction is already underway, with a dedicated team of healthcare professionals working behind the scenes to ensure a smooth transition for existing patients. The local council has further supported the project by granting a tax exemption and waiving building permit fees, reinforcing the importance of this initiative for the entire community.

How You Can Help

While this $1 million gift sets the project on the right path, there’s still work to be done. Every donation, no matter the size, plays a crucial role in bringing this much-needed primary care clinic to life.

This milestone highlights the power of community-driven healthcare, where local generosity creates meaningful change. By supporting the SOS Community Primary Care Clinics Fund, you can be a part of the solution, ensuring that everyone in our region has access to quality healthcare.
