Development Officer- Job Description

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

Position Overview:

As a Development Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring the success of the Foundation’s Major Gift and Planned Giving programs. As Development Officer, you will report directly to the CEO and be responsible for helping to advance the mission of the SOS Medical Foundation by fostering strong relationships with key partners and stakeholders, and will generate philanthropic support from individuals, corporations and foundations. This role requires a dynamic individual with a proven track record in event planning, grant writing, and effective communication through various channels, including social media.

Roles and Responsibilities

Development

  • Manage a portfolio of 120+ donors/potential donors capable of making major gifts of $10,000 and above.
  • Arrange and conduct face-to-face meetings with partners and potential partners, making full and effective use of the expertise and experience of Foundation staff and Volunteers.
  • Manage a communication schedule for major contributors that includes an update on the usage of funds, current state of programs, and future needs of the organization.
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase existing donor-giving levels and commitments.
  • Provide ongoing, effective donor engagement through personalized reporting, donor meetings and the creation of innovative stewardship strategies as required.
  • Monitor all partner contacts to ensure positive and purposeful partner and donor relations.
  • Attend Board meetings when requested and participate on Committees as directed.

Communication

  • Develop and implement and oversee a public relations strategy that raises the brand profile of the SOS Medical Foundation.
  • Oversee the development and production of all marketing and communications materials including the case for support, proposals, donor impact reports, e-newsletters, event collateral, website, e-communications etc.
  • Identify digital media and direct mail strategies to cultivate and steward existing donors, acquire new supporters, and raise awareness.
  • Create and implement a donor stewardship strategy and plan with measurable goals to support revenue growth from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Support differentiated donor relations strategies across channels of giving i.e., major, annual, corporate etc.

Grant Writing

  • Identify, research, and pursue grant opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
  • Prepare compelling grant proposals, applications, and reports to secure funding for various projects and initiatives.
  • Manage donor acknowledgement, stewardship and public recognition.

Event Planning:

 Conceptualize, plan, and execute fundraising events to engage donors and raise funds for SOS Medical Foundation.

  • Coordinate logistics, budgeting, and promotion for events, ensuring a seamless and impactful experience for participants.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • As directed by the Chief Executive Officer.

Required Competencies

  • Proven experience in event planning, grant writing, and individual fundraising within a non-profit setting.
  • Experience working effectively with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to set priorities, complete work with minimal supervision and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge is an asset.
  • Proficiency in social media platforms and email marketing tools.
  • Proven ability to secure, grow and sustain meaningful and lasting relationships.
  • Articulate, confident and with an ability to communicate effectively with all levels of internal and external contacts.
  • Maintain a high level of professional relationships with all donors: adhere to the highest ethical standards; demonstrate empathetic disposition, and perseverance; reflect an optimistic and positive attitude, and convey sensitivity to the needs of the donors.
  • Able to interpret and communicate complex programs and ideas to a varied audience.
  • Ability to balance competing priorities, complex situations and tight deadlines.

  • CFRE is an asset.

Working Conditions      

  • Regular office hours with some travel; occasional weekend and evening hours as required to support the mission of the organization – overtime as required.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
